Masjid Quba, also known as Masjid e Quba or Quba Mosque, is the first mosque in the history of Islam. Only a few kilometers outside the center of Madinah lies Masjid e Quba the very first mosque in Islam to be constructed. It was at this mosque that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) dismounted when he came to Madinah on his emigration. Before even stepping into the city, he decided to establish the foundation of a mosque—a clear indication of the importance of prayer and gathering in Islam.

Introduction:

One of the most sacred Islamic destinations, Masjid Quba is one of the most sacred. This mosque is not only a piece of history but an icon of religion, spirituality, and congregation. Pilgrims to Madinah make sure to pay a visit to this sacred place on their itinerary.

Quranic Reference:

Masjid e Quba gets special mention in the Holy Quran, i.e., Surah At-Tawbah (9:108), in which Allah says:

A mosque whose foundation has been laid on righteousness from the very beginning is more suitable for you to stand in. Therein are men who love to cleanse themselves; and Allah loves those who cleanse themselves.”

This verse bases the mosque on righteousness and piety and establishes it as an area of spiritual chastity and divine sanction.

Reference in Hadith:

There are nineteen Sahih al-Bukhari hadiths mentioning the merits of the mosque; thirteen Sahih Muslim hadiths; two Sunan Abi Dawud hadiths; six Al-Muwatta hadiths.[22][better source needed]

Muhammad visited the mosque and offered prayers inside it. This is referred to in numerous hadith:

Narrated by ‘Abdullah bin Dinar: Ibn ‘Umar said: “The Prophet used to visit the Mosque of Quba every Saturday (sometimes) on foot and (sometimes) on riding animals.” ‘Abdullah (Ibn ‘Umar) did the same thing too

— Muhammad al-Bukhari, Sahih al-Bukhari Volume 2, Book 21, Number 284[23]
Alike Ibn ‘Umar: The Prophet would ride to the Mosque of Quba at times on foot and at times riding. Added Nafi Mawla Ibn Umar (in another version), “Then would perform two Rakat (in the Mosque of Quba).”

— Collected by Muhammad al-Bukhari, Sahih al-Bukhari Volume 2, Book 21, Number 285[24]

Masjid Quba History:

Masjid e Quba is the beginning of one of the most significant events in Islamic history—the Hijrah. When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) started his journey from Makkah and arrived at the outskirts of Madinah, the first thing he did was to construct a mosque in the tiny town of Quba. The uniqueness of this mosque lies in the fact that the Prophet himself laid the foundation stones of the mosque by his own hand.Less a building, Masjid Quba was a destination where early Muslim women and men came not merely to pray, but to study, plot, and make connections. It was an exemplar of what a mosque ought to be—an exemplar of faith and unity.

Significance of Praying at Masjid Quba:

Praying in Masjid e Quba is a Sunnah (practice) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He used to visit the mosque regularly and encouraged others to do the same. According to a hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Whoever purifies himself at home and then goes to Masjid Quba and prays there, he will have a reward equal to that of performing Umrah.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah: 1412)

This makes Masjid Quba Madinah a must-visit for those performing Hajj or Umrah. Visitors often perform ablution (wudu) at their place of stay and then pray two rak’ahs in the mosque to earn this great reward.

The Architecture of Quba Mosque:

Old Structure:

The original configuration copied the functional needs of early Muslim society in creating basic architectural features to be adopted in mosque construction. The first mosque had a square prayer hall, a plain mihrab for qiblah direction, and few ablution facilities. The modest start determined the functional dimensions of Islamic houses of worship, which still affect mosque construction up to the current times.

Modern Expansions:

Its most important revamp in modern times was done by King Fahd, and it then became a majestic structure that could accommodate thousands of faithful believers.

Facilities:

. Climate control units providing comfort to the believers during all seasons

. State-of-the-art ablution facilities with the latest sanitation

. Accessibility facilities for visitors with different physical capabilities

Masjid Quba Sejarah:

Visiting Masjid Quba Madinah:

Masjid Quba Madinah is just 6 kilometers from Masjid al-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque). Many pilgrims include a visit to Quba Mosque in their itinerary. To follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), visitors are encouraged to:

  1. Perform ablution (wudu) before leaving their place.
  2. Pray two rak’ahs in the mosque with sincerity.
  3. Spend some time reflecting on the historical and spiritual importance of the mosque.

Lessons from Masjid Quba History:

The story of Masjid e Quba teaches Muslims many valuable lessons:

. Sincerity in worship, as the mosque was founded on piety and devotion.

. Unity in the Muslim community, as it became a gathering place for the early Muslims.
